The homoparental family, one more family

Share

Our society is increasingly evolving and there is no longer just one type of family. Currently there are many families that distance themselves from the classic concept of the traditional family, made up of a heterosexual mother and father with biological children.

The families of the 21st century are very diverse; single parents, homoparental families, interracial, reconstituted, childless, adoptive, numerous... The concept of family is becoming more inclusive and diverse.

Wanting to form a homoparental family is a natural desire in the lives of many homosexual couples. Homoparenting is already recognized by multiple countries such as Spain, Mexico and Argentina where equal marriage is the law. In this case, to conceive a child together, if you want at least one of the members of the couple to be a genetic parent, you need the contribution of a third person or another couple of the opposite sex. A homosexual couple who wants to have a child is in a very similar situation to a person who wants to be a single parent. These types of families have different options of being mothers and fathers. Let's go see them.

Artificial insemination

Artificial insemination by anonymous or known sperm donation (obtained through a sperm bank) or surrogacy are methods of conception that are increasingly practiced by homosexual couples who want to start a family. In Spain, any woman of legal age can go to an assisted reproduction clinic to proceed with artificial insemination regardless of her marital status and her sexual orientation. On the other hand, surrogacy (also called “womb rental”) is not regulated in Spain, regardless of whether it is to form a hetero or homo-parental family. In other countries, however, it is regulated, such as in some states of Mexico, Argentina, Portugal or the US.

Homoparental co-parenting

If a homosexual person wants to create a homoparental family, they can opt for co-parenting with applications like ours. Co-parenting arises from the genuine desire, often impossible to mitigate, to be a mother or a father and begins when a minimum of two people decide to agree to have a baby, whether or not they are in a couple, in a safe and planned way.

This alternative to the classic family model can be made a reality from multiple options:

  • A couple of women and a man. In this option it is possible that one of the women decides to gestate.
  • A woman and a man.
  • Two women and two men.
  • Two men.
  • Two women.
  • People of any gender: transgender women and men, non-binary people, etc.

Before starting this exciting journey with confidence and clarity of mind, we strongly recommend creating a co-parenting plan. It is a fundamental document in a co-parenting process, where the people involved agree on the way in which both parents plan to exercise their parental responsibilities. This point is very important, so that your homoparental family forms a welcoming and stable environment for the future baby.

Therefore, co-parenting develops from a heteroparental reality (when the parents are of different sex), homoparental (of the same sex) or in a variety of genders. Is a reality. All families are valuable, yes. At last.
