These are the differences between in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination

We would define Assisted Reproduction as a set of medical treatments that help and seek to find a pregnancy in the event that there is a fertility problem, be it male, female or both. The best known are Artificial Insemination and In Vitro Fertilization.

These two treatments allow couples to fulfill their dream and desire to be parents. Both couples with fertility problems, such as homosexual couples, single mothers or co-parents, can benefit from these techniques.

What is artificial insemination?

  • Artificial insemination (AI) is an assisted reproduction treatment that consists of introducing a semen sample, either from the couple or from a donor, into the woman's uterus.
  • Main characteristics of artificial insemination
  • This is the introduction of semen into the uterus after a treatment to stimulate ovulation.
  • Fertilization occurs “in vivo”, inside the woman.
  • It is a cheaper technique.
  • It is a simpler technique because there is no egg retrieval.
  • Ovarian stimulation must be controlled if you do not want to achieve a multiple pregnancy.
  • The percentage of success of Artificial Insemination is not exact, since it varies depending on each case, the age of the patient, etc.

What is in vitro fertilization or IVF?

  • IVF is a technique in which the fertilization of the gametes is carried out in a reproduction laboratory. In this treatment, an extraction of the woman's eggs is carried out to fertilize them in the laboratory and introduce the embryos obtained inside the uterus. In this case the success rate is much higher than that of AI.
  • Characteristics of the In Vitro Fertilization technique
  • Fertilization is carried out "in vitro", that is, outside the woman.
  • It is a more complex technique since it is necessary to perform a surgical intervention.
  • It is a more expensive technique.
  • IVF is the technique with the greatest chance of success per attempt. In some cases even 60%.
